• Mind My Brains, Darling! (poster by Jeremy Hodges)

Set in Britain in 1979, Mind My Brains, Darling! follows the ups and downs of family life with the Worthingtons – a typical family with a mum, dad, two kids and a grandfather. Typical that is, for a peri-apocalyptic society ravaged by war and zombies for the past 4 years. Oh, and the dad is a Zombie.

‘In The Flesh’ from BBC3 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00szzcm

Our good friend @GrrAargh alerted us to a new zombie three-parter about to air on BBC3 after reading about it on StarBurst Magazine. The BBC Press Release has all the details:

In The Flesh is an exciting new three-part drama for BBC Three that tells the story of zombie teenager Kieren Walker (Luke Newberry) and his reintegration back into both the local community and the heart of his family.

After his death four years ago, his friends and family thought they’d never see Kieren again. But then, shortly after his funeral, thousands of the dead were re-animated; and now, after months of re-habilitation and medication, the zombies are gradually being returned to their homes.

Now known as PDS sufferers (Partially Deceased Syndrome) – and since the passing of the PDS Protection act – the government have set an agenda of acceptance and tolerance, one that is at odds with the communities abandoned at the time of the rising, and the bloody battle between zombies and humans that ensued.

Sounds good, huh? We’re always happy to hear about new zombie series, particularly ones set in the UK.

Of course, this is a drama so I’m not sure that their vicar will be quite up the comedic standards of Father Aloysius Rambo, and I think that the uniforms and elite training of Z Force could probably be up to the challenges of dealing with modern-day zombies. Especially if Koenig managed to ‘redeploy’ Peabody.

We are not sure when we’ll be able to watch it, so we’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

Our own little zombie series is on hiatus at the moment and we haven’t any news to share about a possible second season so the best we can offer is an amazing rewatch of all episodes, specials and promos. Hope springs eternal…

It was an intense experience filming, but huge fun, too. We learned a great deal from Rob and hope to work with him again soon! You can see more pictures from the set here.

New video: Why we developed BodyLine filming technique

Awards, cast and crew, production log, Webseries

Indie Intertube 2nd Annual Awards logo

After winning an Indie Intertube Innovation Award this year we decided to release this video showing some of the reasons why we developed the BodyLine filming technique. In our early series we had a cast and crew of two – just Paul and me. We were playing with the technique of not showing faces, and after the feedback we had from ‘Goodnight Princess‘ we wanted to see how far we could take it.

We knew it would be impossible to create ‘Mind My Brains, Darling!‘ with only two people, even if we did play multiple roles. So we were delighted that our family, and Alan Douglas and Josephine Hoy were willing and able to be part of the cast. Filming was hard work, but having such a wonderful crew really helped. BodyLine is probably not going to change the world, but is certainly an arrested technique and makes the videos stand out. Of course, some people hate it with a passion, but you can’t please everyone :)

Here we outline four of the advantages of BodyLine for small indie productions:

What are your thoughts on BodyLine?

Mind My Brains, Darling! up for three Indie Intertube Awards – watch live on Sunday!

Awards, cast and crew, Indie Intertube, Season 1, Webseries

Indie Intertube 2nd Annual Awards logo

2nd Annual Indie Intertube Awards

Indie Intertube recently unveiled the nominees for their 2nd Annual Awards, and we were thrilled to receive three nominations! In addition to getting through to the final round of the Audience Choice Awards thanks to the amazingly dedicated voting by some wonderful people, we also received the following nominations:

Best Sidekick: Paul Higgins and Edward Higgins as Jeremy Worthington

This is a great award category, and it is fantastic to see that Jeremy really made an impression. We used the BodyLine filming technique so both Paul and Edward could play the part of Jeremy, depending on what was needed for the scene. They also both shared the part of The Colonel/Granddad, something many people were surprised to find out :) Congratulations to both of you!

Best Set Design

After all the work we put into the set design – and the fact that so many people thought that the set was, in fact, our house! –  it is a real thrill to be nominated in this category. We are up against some really tough competition, so fingers crossed.

It was also our great pleasure to help with the Nominations video by announcing the Best Drama category nominees, and you can watch the whole video here:

Congratulations to all the nominees, including fellow VCONers Border Guardians of Ackernon and Standard Action for their multiple nominations. We can’t wait to watch April and Amanda host the Award show live this Sunday (March 11th) on Mingle Media TV.

Hanging out on Google+

cast and crew, Webseries

when Higlet met Efehan

Last night we did a Hang Out on Google+ and it was full of fun, laughter and good times. Efehan had suggested we meet up since we had never spoken directly before and he wanted to try out the Hang Out capabilities of Google+. Even though we have known each other for years and he very graciously and magnificently created the animated intro to ‘Mind My Brains, Darling!’, we had never talked to each other. Welcome to the brave new world :)

After a few technical hitches (for some reason the Hanging Out using Chrome just didn’t work) we were soon in business. I think the strangest thing about it was how strange it wasn’t. We were old friends catching up with the added bonus of being able to see each other. Awesome. Once we made the Hang Out public we were soon joined by Josephine Hoy (the magnificent Dr Feyrer), Louis Gray* and Megan Lynch (musician and creator of the wonderful ‘Songs The Brothers Warner Taught Me‘).

Efehan Joey Louis Higlet and Megan Hang Out

It was brilliant to talk to people, and when more people joined in it turned into an online party with people talking on camera and chatting in the group chat, too.

Aaron Chris Doug Efehan Joey Majid Higlet Rob Hanging Out

Many of the people, like Aaron Trahan (who was one of our wonderful voiceover winners) and Doug Luberts (who is behind the exciting new GeektasticNebula.com) I knew from The Guild, and others like Chris A Kim, David Hillman and Rob Michael I knew from Friendfeed (where I also first met Josephine, Megan and Louis). Some people popped in just to say hi, others stayed most of the time we were talking. It was good times.

You can even see who was there afterwards because Google+ gives you a summary :)  If you’ve never tried a Hang Out I’d recommend it – and make sure you invite me!

Awesome Hangout People:

* Louis Gray is hard to describe but ‘international man of social media‘ is one of those ways. He is also a pretty good singer. And apparently he works for Google now. #SUWGOMH

Indie Intertube Awards – nominate your People’s Choice choice!

Awards

Indie Intertube Header
Last year the 2010 Indie Intertube Awards were the only award show I watched all the way through, and I loved it. Unfortunately we didn’t have and episodes of ‘Mind My Brains, Darling!‘ released so we weren’t eligible for an award, but we loved the show! The 2011 Indie Intertube Awards are now underway, and you have a couple of days left to get your nomination in for the Audience Choice Award. You can nominate as many webseries as you want, and I’m sure you can think of at least one* or two deserving shows…

All the details are on indieintetube.tv and the rules are really simple. So what are you waiting for?

Indie Intertube and Ackernon in Victoria, BC

April, Amanda, Angela, Paul and Laura in Victoria, BC, after our in-studio appearance on the Indie Intertube Podcast

Next week Amanda and April celebrate their 100th Indie Intertube Podcast on Blogtalk Radio. Congratulations to both of them for delivering so many high-quality, informative and downright fun shows – a huge achievement! Going over to Victoria for your show was certainly a highlight of 2011 :)

If you were to nominate a certain Rom-Zom-Britcom then you might want to consider adding the fact you really liked the soundtrack by Megan Lynch, or the animation by Efehan Elbi, or the artwork by Jeremy Hodges, or the guest stars Josephine Hoy and Alan Douglas. You know, as a thought :)

Original Teasers now on our ‘HigletFilms YouTube channel

production log, Webseries

Mind My Brains Darling Teaser 1

Inspector Koenig is his usual charming self in Teaser One

Those with long memories might recall those days before we launched our Indiegogo campaign. We needed to make some teasers that would excite people about the possibilities of BodyLine and ‘Mind My Brains, Darling!’ but we were constrained by two things. One, the scripts weren’t completed and two, we didn’t any sets built. There was no possibility of us using actual footage so we had to write and shoot two teasers that could be filmed in locations we already had access to.

Mind My Brains Darling Teaser 2

Kids in peril is always a winner. Double points if they are YOUR kids!

We ended up with Teaser One filmed at the police station (our garage before the set was built), and Teaser Two filmed in the Worthington’s garden (our back yard). Before we filmed Teaser One we rehearsed it in the kitchen, getting shots right and making sure the reveal would work ok. We will not be releasing that footage. I think it was tragically chopped up, burned to crisp and then scattered to the four winds :)

How did we do? I think they stand up pretty well, and I’d be interested to hear what you think. We’ve uploaded them to our YouTube channel and you can view them here:

Teaser One

Teaser Two

We have some VERY exciting news to share soon. So stay tuned!
